As for ranged weapons, you’ll be using two twin pistols, a rocket launcher, a shotgun, and even a hat.Īlong with Dante’s weapons, he also different styles that affect how you will fight in combat. Playing as Dante you’ll get to use multiple melee weapons including a sword, a demon hand that allows you to punch demons, two maces that can turn into a motorcycle, and a pair of nunchucks. Out of the three characters Dante is definitely the most complex and fun character to play as. It’s extremely satisfying to grapple an enemy in midair, finish them off with a devastating series of strikes, then immediately lock on to another target, while firing off the Devil Breaker Punchline, which is an arm that acts as a rocket launcher, and then finishing off your foes with a high style rating. Nero is honestly a great character to play as. Because of this when it came to equipping my Devil Breakers I decided to bring along one I knew that I’d be using more often and if I did come across enemies that needed their guard broken I just had to make the best of it. So let’s say you have this arm but it’s in the last slot you have to go through the other arms before you’re able to use the one you actually need. There is one Devil Breaker that can break an enemies guard, which works perfectly against enemies that carry shields or use scissors to block your attacks. ![]() ![]() I found this to be a bit of a pain because there certain arms that work better against certain enemies, for example. For some reason, the game doesn’t give you a way to swap to a new arm when you want instead you have to use the current one you have equipped if you want to get to a certain arm. The Devil Breakers are a great tool, however, one flaw I had was how you swap to new arms. Nero’s Devil Breakers is actually my first issue with the game. After a set of events, Nero ends up losing part of his arm, in order to keep up in combat a gun mechanic named Nico creates mechanical arms for Nero, each arm has different powers and when used properly can give you a big advantage in combat. ![]() A new addition to Nero is the Devil Breakers. Along with his weapons, you also have a grappling hook that can pull enemies towards you on the ground or in midair to pull off some stylish combos. Nero’s offensive consists of using a large sword that can be powered up to dish out extra damage and a revolver. The first character you’ll get to play as is Nero. Throughout your fifteen hour adventure, you’re going to be slashing and shooting your way with three different characters. Granted I don’t truly start focusing on my ratings until my second or third playthrough and with six different difficulties, it’s going to be easy to replay this game a few times. I’ve always loved the style rating system used in the series, it really gives you a reason to replay the game or just individuals missions in order to increase your overall rating. Your rating can get penalized depending on if you died and to revive yourself. These ratings not only apply to individual battles but also at the end of the mission. ![]() An SSS rating, on the other hand, means you’re a master demon hunter, capable of pulling off impressive combos that would make anyone jealous and you give your enemy no chance at ending your life. Ending a fight with a D rating means you’re just spamming the same moves over and over, getting hit a lot and not timing your moves properly. Instead of keeping track of how many enemies you’re hitting you are instead judged by your style because killing demons is only one part of the job you also need to be able to kill with stylish combos.ĭevil May Cry 5 has seven style ratings, ranging from D to SSS. One thing that the DMC series has done differently than other games in its genre, is how the game rates you in combat. Like with any hack n’ slash game, the main objective of Devil May Cry 5 is to kill mobs of enemies with a variety of weapons and combos, until you get to a big ass boss and have to take it down. So let’s dive into what makes Devil May Cry 5 my official contender for game of the year. I am just going to start off right away and say that Devil May Cry 5 is a fantastic game and any fan of old school hack n’ slash games will feel right at home while playing and newcomers will enjoy some of the more modern elements that have been added.
